Make YOUR Voice Heard on Senate Bill 2381
Based on recent events in our district, I am asking you to sign my petition to have Senate Bill 2381 called for a vote during the upcoming fall Veto Session. SB 2381 would strengthen protections for children by requiring sex offender registration when an adult is convicted of sexually motivated, unauthorized video recording or live video transmission involving a minor, as determined by the court. Recently, a Mundelein teacher and volleyball coach was arrested and charged with felony unauthorized video recording of a juvenile. Now, another local teacher and volleyball coach, this time from Wauconda School District 118, has been arrested and charged with possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material. While these cases involve different allegations, both raise serious concerns about the safety of children in our communities. As a mother and former prosecutor, I believe we have a responsibility to address gaps in our laws that leave children vulnerable. Under current Illinois law, a conviction for unauthorized video recording of a minor does not, by itself, automatically require sex offender registration, even when the offense was sexually motivated. Senate Bill 2381 would address that gap by establishing registration requirements for qualifying offenses committed after the legislation takes effect. Senate Bill 2381 previously advanced to Third Reading in the Senate but was not called for a final vote. It was later re-referred to the Senate Assignments Committee, where it currently remains. These incidents are a troubling reminder that we cannot afford to leave gaps in our laws when it comes to protecting children. I am calling on my colleagues in the Senate to bring SB 2381 to a vote during the fall Veto Session. Sign my petition today and help me make sure this legislation gets the attention it deserves.
